Country Roads Scholars Tour

  • The diversity and opportunities as well as the challenges of WV were vividly displayed during my trip. It is an invaluable experience.
  • As a faculty colleague who has been at WVU for more than a third of a century, the Scholars Tour provides a fresh reminder of the resources, both human and natural, that the State offers. My sincere appreciation to the Provost for providing the funding to continue this unique opportunity to get to know the people and places of West Virginia.
  • These tours are a great way to see the state quickly and in-depth--that's critical for busy new faculty.
  • A good experience for those who know the state and invaluable for those new to this area.
  • As a transplant to WV, I found the trip to the Eastern Panhandle very beneficial in understanding that area, but the most useful aspect of the trip was getting to know the diversity of the research and service taking place through WVU's Extension Service.
  • It was a great opportunity to see another piece of West Virginia. I was so impressed with dinner on the stage at the Smoot and the dedication of the Jorgesons to this project. The Oil and Gas Museum is wonderful and I plan to take others back. I have been on several trips now and they have all been spectacular. I look for products from other places that I was introduced to via the tour. (Kirkwood winery for example and Blue Smoke Salsa - whenever I am at Tamarac I pick up these items)
  • This was a terrific opportunity to learn and see more about West Virginia as well as meet some of the outstanding WVU faculty. There are a few I might with whom I may be able to collaborate. Since the tour was after the end of the spring term and the fall one has not started yet, there has been no opportunity to take any action. I'd love to go again.
  • This is a great activity that helps those of us who are not native West Virginians gain an appreciation of the state and its citizens. It also helps us understand how WVU impacts the daily lives of West Virginians. It helps us think of ways in which we might contribute to the betterment of our state.
  • I believe Country Roads Scholars Tours are an excellent idea. Their usefulness should not be measured just in specifics, but also in terms of general enrichment of perspective and experience.
  • I have participated in the tour twice. In my case, and based on the courses I teach and my research, I find these trips educational, and an invaluable source for personal and academic information. Because of this (in my case) I would be interested in joining the tour again. The tours are intense (a lot of info in a short time), but they have been very well organized! I always learn a lot! To be able to attend the tour requires time, I need to organize my other academic activities (sometimes this is not easy). I believe that because of this, personal and academic interests are key to join the tours. Additionally, it is really nice to meet and share time with the Provost and other authorities at least once a year.
  • This is the best faculty development program ever! Since I am not from West Virginia and do not live in the state, the Country Roads tour really gave me a picture of the communities that some of my students grew up in and the communities that my students go to in their rural health rotations. It also educated me about opportunities for networking in both service and research - prison programs, extension agents and programs, businesses.
