Feed Size Chart for Trout

March 2001

Pelleted commercial fish feeds are available in a variety of pellet sizes. Choice of the size of pellet to feed should be based on the size of the fish. Selecting an appropriate pellet size is important to ensure that as many fish as possible receive a pellet they can ingest. Attention to the size of the pellet fed can help the producer reduce waste of valuable feed and promote better fish growth within the production system.

Use the chart below to determine the correct feed pellet size for the size of fish being fed. Feed pellet size is listed on the left, with fish size as the number of fish per pound, or as the total length in inches, listed in the columns on the right.

  • Example 1: Fish sampled at 80 fish/pound should be fed a #4 Crumble feed.
  • Example 2: 7" fish should be fed a 5/32 pellet.
