Issue Reports

The purpose of the Public Issues Education Program is to provide the faculty and staff of the West Virginia University Extension Service with current and complete information on issues of local, state, and/or national importance.

Many different issues can affect what the WVU Extension Service is trying to accomplish through its variety of programs. The need for the program, how the program should be focused, and the anticipated, expected, and desired outcomes of the program can all be effected. That is why it is so important for extension faculty and staff to remain well-informed on important matters. These matters encompass the full spectrum of extension areas: agriculture, community and economic development, youth education and leadership training, family-based programs, and safety and health activities.

Issue Reports

Some issues require attention because of their importance to WVU Extension Service programs or their potential to change the lives of West Virginians. Information on these issues will be posted to this site. This will include continuous updates on actions at the federal and state level, as well as other important matters. Information such as background materials, situation statements, and an analysis of potential scenarios will be prepared on these issues when needed.

Presently, there are several important issues facing West Virginia. They relate to the questions of governance, land use, and quality of life. They include:

Many of these matters (or related issues) are likely to be considered by the West Virginia Legislature during sessions in 1999. Some will also be the focus of research and educational activities. And depending upon what occurs, all of these issues could potentially have a major impact on WVU Extension Service programs and clientele.

To assist Extension educators throughout the state, the Public Issues Education Program will provide background and briefing materials in the form of issue reports on these or other important topics, on an "as requested" basis.
