WVU-FSE Offers Fire Department Mini-grants
West Virginia University Fire Service Extension (WVU-FSE) announces a new program to help state firefighters upgrade their training. WVU-FSE is offering 10 mini-grants per calendar year that cover tuition to a WVU-FSE course.
Small rural fire departments face great restraints. Discussing fire grants in 2002, West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller stated that there are approximately 16,000 firefighters in West Virginia serving in 437 fire departments. And, he said, “Virtually every one of these departments is under funded.”
Clearly, although training is critical, most fire departments, particularly small volunteer units, simply don’t have sufficient funds to dedicate to training. These tuition waivers will help individual firefighters advance their careers, which in turn benefits communities.
Each state fire department is eligible to apply for and receive one WVU-FSE Fire Department Mini-grant per year. To apply for a tuition mini-grant, please print out the application and follow directions carefully.
