GRE/MAT/GMAT/TOEFL
Most graduate programs at WVU require either the graduate record examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores from all applicants. Some programs require both the general and the appropriate advanced tests before considering an applicant for admission. The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is required by all of the business graduate programs, although the Master of Science in Industrial Relations will accept the GRE and the Economics programs require the GRE. Students should take the tests required for their prospective graduate majors before enrollment in and preferably before filing an application for admission.
The applicant should request the Educational Testing Service to forward scores from the GRE and GMAT examinations to the WVU Office of Admissions and Records. The code identifying WVU to the GRE is 5904. In addition, students should be encouraged to send a machine reproduced copy of their GRE or MAT scores, if available, along with their initial application to the Office of Admissions and Records.
Information concerning the Miller Analogies Test may be obtained from the Psychology Department or the counseling service of the applicant's undergraduate institution or from the WVU Student Counseling Service (304-293-4431). Applications to take the GRE or GMAT must be mailed to the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08540. Applicants wishing to take the GRE, GMAT, or TOEFL examinations in Morgantown may schedule appointments with the WVU Computer-Based Testing Center (304) 293-0699. Candidates who either are paying by credit card or who have a voucher from the ETS may schedule an appointment by phone. Candidates paying by check or money order will need to come to the Testing Center to schedule an appointment. The process of going through the ETS usually takes 2-3 weeks before the voucher is issued.
All applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency. WVU uses the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as measures of English language proficiency. A score of 213 on the computer-based TOEFL or 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS is the minimum required of all such applicants. Applicants must make arrangements to take the TOEFL/IELTS well in advance of the desired date of enrollment at WVU. Information about registration for the TOEFL can be obtained by writing to: Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6154, Princeton, NJ 08541-6154, USA, or by contacting the local office of the United States Information Service (USIS).
Applicants who have received a high school diploma or a bachelor's degree in the United States need not submit TOEFL/IELTS results. However, applicants only having a master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university must still provide acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores.
In some cases, it may be possible to consider applications from students who lack adequate TOEFL or IELTS scores but who will enroll in the WVU Intensive English Program. Such applicants must contact the Intensive English Program (IEP) directly and notify the Office of Admissions and Records of their intentions. Applicants for graduate programs should also notify the academic department of interest of their intentions. Admission to the IEP does not guarantee admission to the University or to a specific program of study. Inquiries concerning the IEP should be addressed to the Intensive English Program, Department of Foreign Languages, West Virginia University, P.O. Box 6298, Morgantown, WV 26505-6298.
In rare instances, a university graduate program may request a waiver of the TOEFL or IELTS examination. The Office of Graduate Education, the ESL Program, and the International Division of Admissions and Records have agreed that the following procedure should be used when requesting such a waiver: (1) The university department seeking the waiver should contact both Ms. Helen Huntley of the ESL Program and the Director of the Office of Graduate Education so that the international student's English proficiency may be evaluated shortly after arrival on campus; and (2) as a result of the on-campus interview and assessment, the student may be granted a waiver, but will be required to register for an appropriate ESL course(s) as an aid to help ensure success in the student's future academic career.
