Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get an application?
After you have been admitted to the University and have paid the academic deposit, a letter from the Housing Office will be automatically mailed to you. This letter will contain instructions on how to complete your housing application and pay the deposit online through the STAR Information System, accessible through your MIX account or how to request a paper application. More About the Application Process.

When are housing deposits due?
There is no deadline for the $225.00 deposit on housing. However, assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis, so it's important to complete/return the application/contract and deposit early. As a reminder, this can be done on-line through the STAR Information System, accessible through your MIX account. The housing application/contract is a legally binding contract committing you to live in campus housing for the entire academic year. However, we will refund $125.00 of the deposit if we receive your written notification of intent to cancel your contract by May 1 (December 1 for the spring term). After this date, deposits are nonrefundable regardless of when you pay the deposit. Application/contracts can be cancelled if you are not attending WVU by notifying us in writing or using the online cancellation system at www.sa.wvu.edu/cancel. Deposit money is credited toward your fall term tuition and fees. More About the Application Process.

When are housing assignments made?
For the fall term, we begin the assignment process in February. The process begins in November for the spring term. More About Housing Assignments.

Can I request a specific roommate?
Yes. If you and a friend(s) want to room together, you must enter each others' name on the housing application/contract in the space provided. We recommend sending the application/contracts and the deposit money together in the same envelope. If this is not possible, don't hold your application/ contract too long waiting for your roommate. As long as your roommate's application/contract arrives within 30 days of yours, we will do our best to room you together. In all cases, all requests must be received within 30 days of each other and before the February 1st deadline for the fall term. Once again, it's best to apply early! More About Requesting a Roommate.

Can I live off-campus?
WVU requires all single, first-year students (including transfers with fewer than 29 transferable credit hours) to live in University housing. Students living at home with parents within commuting distance of WVU, married students, students with children, and students age 21 and older are exempt from this requirement. More About Living Off-Campus.

Which residence hall is the nicest?
Each hall has its own individual characteristics. The choice requires personal opinion. We strongly recommend that you visit our campus to look around and see for yourself. More About the Residence Halls.

Can I sign a housing contract for one semester?
No, unless you are beginning in the spring term. Otherwise, the housing contract is binding for the entire academic year.

Can I get long distance service?
Yes. The residence halls have long distance service through ECCI. Account numbers are preassigned and will be sent to you in the mail before the term begins. A reply to the company allows students to use any University phone to make long distance calls with charges billed to the account number. Roommates have separate account numbers, and each residence room has a phone in it. Bills can be mailed to the student or to the parents.

Are there computer labs in the residence halls?
Yes. Evansdale Residential Complex, Arnold, Boreman, and Stalnaker Halls have computer labs with on-site consultants.

What tutoring services are available?
WVU provides Learning Centers in Stalnaker, Arnold, and Boreman Halls and in the Evansdale Residential Complex. These centers are staffed by students trained to tutor in most freshman courses as well as the sciences and math. In addition, they provide study skill and time management training.

Can I bring a hot plate, microwave, air conditioner, or other appliances?
Sorry, due to Fire Safety Regulations, these and other electrical appliances are not permitted in the residence halls. More About What to Bring.

What about refrigerators?
You may bring your own refrigerator as long as it does not exceed 2.5 cubic feet, 120 volts, and 2 amps. Refrigerators also can be rented from an independent firm during Orientation and upon your arrival in Morgantown. If you order your refrigerator during Orientation, it will be in your room when you arrive in August. More About What to Bring.

What's the weather like in Morgantown?
The mean annual temperature is 52 degrees, and the annual rainfall is 41.2 inches. What this means is that Morgantown enjoys all of the seasons, and the weather is generally mild. There is rain in the spring and snow in the winter.
