AP Correspondent Visits SOJ (9/16/08)
Arnold Zeitlin, a former Associated Press foreign correspondent and bureau chief in Africa and Asia, who helped cover the fall of Saigon in 1975, will speak to Journalism School students on Tuesday, Sept. 16, starting at 5:30 p.m.in Room G2 on the lower floor, and on Wednesday, Sept. 17, starting at 6 p.m. in Room 205. For the past six years, Zeitlin has been a visiting professor in China. He will discuss such topics as covering China, journalism in China and what Chinese students face going into news media work. He will take questions afterward. All students, faculty, staff and guests are invited.

THE FLORIDA TIMES-UNION SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (2009)

The Florida Times-Union is soliciting applications from college students for its annual summer intern program. Internships may be offered in one or more of the following areas:  copy editing/design, graphics, photography, reporting.

Applications for internships must be received by December 1, 2008
Interns who are selected will be notified on or before Jan. 1, 2009.

The intern program extends through the summer months, and exact dates  of employment will be negotiated. Interns may expect to be in the program for about 12 weeks. The salary scale is as follows:

-- Completion of first year of college  -  $375 weekly.
-- Completion of second year of college  -  $400 weekly.
-- Completion of third year of college  -  $435 weekly.
-- Completion of fourth year of college  -   $450 weekly.
-- Completion of graduate school  -  $500 weekly.

Interns will draw a variety of assignments. Meetings will be held with various editors to discuss problems and progress. Every effort will be made to match summer work assignments with the interests of the interns selected to work on the staff of the Times-Union.

Preference will be given to Individuals who have held summer internships with daily newspapers in the past and individuals proven interested in a career in print journalism.

Applications must be made in writing and should include grade point average, previous journalism experience and at least two references, one from within the academic community. Clips of past work should be included with application. It is not necessary for applicants to be majoring in journalism, but that is desirable.  Interns must have their own vehicles.  We are a drug free workplace.

National Student News Seeks Interns
National Student News Service (NSNS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan student media project focused on promoting and highlighting quality student-centered news in the campus media. We are working to promote and produce news that focuses on student issues and student activism, and that uses the tools of investigative journalism to explore student concerns.

GA NEEDED AT WVU CED
The Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED) is looking for a Graduate Assistant to work in its Graphics Department beginning in the fall semester. This position will be for the 2008-09 school year and have the potential to extend into the following fall and spring semester. The CED is seeking a motivated individual studying in the area of fine arts or a related discipline.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

-- Assist in production of CED products such as brochures, fact sheets, flyers, newsletters, posters and other publicity materials.

-- Utilize a Mac and PC for production of documents

-- Help prepare bids for projects and prepare specification sheets for estimates and printing processes.

-- Use a wide variety of graphics department equipment such as a binder, wide format roll laminator, printers, Mac, PC, commercial cutter, scanner and cameras (digital and 35mm).

-- Organize electronic photo files.

Mountaineer Visitation Day Tour Guides Needed
WVU’s Office of New Student Orientation is seeking outgoing individuals who love their university and wish to make a difference for future students of WVU by becoming a Mountaineer Visitation Day tour guide.

The office will be hiring approximately 15 to 20 students to serve as student tour guides for West Virginia University's Mountaineer Visitation Days (MVDs). MVDs are open houses for prospective students and their families. By attending a Mountaineer Visitation Day, prospective students are able to experience firsthand the exciting programs WVU has to offer its students. During their visit, they will have the opportunity to speak with various faculty members and students, tour the campus, and visit one of our residence halls for lunch.

Candidates should have excellent communication and listening skills, be able to work independently without direct supervision, and have a desire to represent WVU.

Student Counselors serve an essential role in the office of Undergraduate Student Recruitment.  The Student Counselors consist of a select group of West Virginia University students who believe in and enjoy the mission of WVU and are able to articulate this to a variety of prospective Mountaineers.

The goal of the Student Communication Center is to initiate and maintain telephone, written, and e-mail contact with prospective West Virginia University students throughout their application and admissions process.

College Photographer of the Year is now accepting student entries for the 63rd annual competition.

As the contest is now completely electronic and there is no longer a printed call for entry for us to send you for distribution to your students, you should have found or will shortly find a postcard in your mailboxes encouraging you to direct students to www.cpoy.org where they can find the entry form and complete instructions on how to prepare and upload images files as well as read about the awards, the rules and the category definitions.

Entry is free again this year thanks to Nikon Inc. and the deadline is Sept. 26, 2008.

The contest will be judged on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Nov. 10-15. Judging is open and you and your students are invited to attend. If you can't join us in person for the judging, rest assured that we will be podcasting again this year in an effort to extend the educational outreach of CPOY.
