Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
General
Who will have an account on MIX?
All students and teaching faculty will have an account on MIX. These accounts are automatically created based on the data within the STAR system.
If I am not taking a summer course, will my account remain active over the summer?
As long as you are registered for the fall semester, your account will remain active over the summer.
MIX is a completely Web-based system. You can access your MIX account from anywhere that you have an internet connection. The only software required is supported Web browser
To check out browsers for Mix please see supported browsers.
How long will I be able to keep my MIX account after I graduate?
You may keep your MIX address for approximately 6 months after you graduate. Seniors who graduate in May, 2007, will have MIX accounts guaranteed until December 31, 2007.
Your e-mail address is username@mix.wvu.edu. Ex: if my user name is abaxter, then my e-mail address is abaxter@mix.wvu.edu. Your address is also displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the e-mail window.
Will e-mail be scanned for viruses?
Yes, mail coming into the MIX e-mail system is being scanned for viruses.
The quota on all student and faculty mailboxes is 250 MB. If a faculty member needs more space, they should write to mix@mail.wvu.edu. Faculty has the option to forward MIX mail to their GroupWise account.
What happens when I reach my quota?
When your mailbox becomes 90% full, you will receive a warning message letting you know that you need to clean out your mailbox. When your mailbox becomes full, you will not receive any more e-mail until the mailbox is cleaned out.
You can view your quota and mailbox usage at the e-mail usage page at http://stats.mix.wvu.edu/. Use your MIX user name and password to log in to the usage page, which contains information on your mailbox that is updated every day at 6:00 p.m.
I am an instructor, will my MIX e-mail automatically forward to my GroupWise account?
No, this is a separate e-mail account. This was done intentionally to allow more flexibility in your e-mail. You can keep your e-mail account separate and use the MIX account for only course-related e-mail and use GroupWise for your research and day to day e-mail. You can also easily forward your MIX e-mail into your GroupWise account.
Who can send e-mail to the course list?
The e-mail class tool is only available to the person listed as the instructor of each course. This is designated within the STAR system.
What are the restrictions on e-mail attachments?
Each message can be up to 2 MB. Each individual attachment on a message can be up to 1.2 MB.
How do I find the MIX e-mail address of another student?
Use the online directory, at http://directory.wvu.edu/, or you can access the directory within MIX e-mail with the following steps:
- Compose a new e-mail message
- Click on the Address button
- Click on the Search button
- Enter the name of the person that you want to search for
- Click on the Search button
Can I forward my MIX e-mail to another e-mail account?
Yes, you can forward your MIX e-mail, but you will only be able to set up autoforwarding of mail to the following domains:
- mail.wvu.edu
- hsc.wvu.edu
- rcbhsc.wvu.edu
This is to ensure that mail is delivered to students and faculty in a prompt and reliable manner. Some students had previously forwarded to outside accounts. WVU will no longer support that option. Faculty, of course, still have the choice to forward to their GroupWise accounts.
Recent graduates will retain their MIX accounts for 6 months after graduation. If you are a recent graduate and wish to have your mail forwarded to an outside account, you will need to call the HelpDesk at 304-293-4444x1 to make this request after July 18, 2006. You will need to provide your birthdate, WVU ID, and graduation date so that we can confirm your information before setting the autoforwarding option. This option is only open to recent graduates.
I can't send e-mail. What should I do?
Make sure that you are using a supported browser version, listed on the MIX stoplight page. If you still have problems sending e-mail, contact the OIT Help Desk at (304) 293-4444 ext. 1 for additional help. If the Help Desk is not available, write to oithelp@mail.wvu.edu.
I'm not receiving e-mail to my MIX account. What should I do?
Contact the OIT Help Desk at (304) 293-4444 for additional help.
Course Tools
I am not listed as the instructor for my course. What should I do?
All course information is automatically updated from the STAR system. If you do not see a course listed in your account that you are teaching, you should check with your department contact to make sure that the information gets updated within STAR. If you do not know who your department contact is, check with your chairperson's office to find out.
Can a department chair access the course information for the courses in his department?
The information that MIX is given comes directly from the STAR system. The only person that has access to the course tools for each course is the person(s) listed as the instructor for the course.
Message Boards
Why is the content box for message board posts so small?
The first input box you see when posting a new message is not intended for the actual content of your message. Instead, the first input box is there to hold a subject or short description of your post. This subject is limited to 512 characters in length.
The full content of your message should instead be entered into the second input box, which allows a much larger content size to provide ample space for message content.

You can also view your WVUID number when you are logged into STAR and reviewing information via the Student Services and Financial Aid links.
Financial Aid asked for my Social Security number. Do I need to give it to them?
Financial Aid is one of the WVU departments that may ask to confirm your Social Security number. They may also ask for your WVUID, so have both ready to give if you call them.
Should I change my PIN (password)?
Yes, all users are forced to change their STAR PIN (password) every 90 days to help safeguard personal data and e-mail privacy.
Is it okay to share this PIN (password) with my roommate or significant other?
We advise you not to share this PIN (password) with anyone. Relationships can change, and sharing your PIN (password) puts your data at risk.
I'm a faculty member. May I post a paper or electronic copy of grades with this new number?
No, you should not post grades with this new number. If a student has not changed their PIN (password) in MIX and someone knows their birth date, it could pose a security risk to their MIX and STAR accounts.
