About Our Program

The West Virginia University Philosophy Department sets itself apart from all other departments with its tight-knit community of both students and faculty. The Philosophy Department sponsors many activities and events and provides its students with many excellent opportunities. The department is currently promoting THE QUESTION not only around campus but also on a global scale. In this way, the WVU Philosophy Department encourages everyone to stop and THINK deeply about questions that really matter.
The department's main activity is the Philosophy Club, which meets every Monday night at 7pm at the Brew Pub on University Avenue. The department also sponsors and advises an Ethics Bowl Team that travels and competes at the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition held in a different location each year. In the spring, the department hosts two Philosophy Conferences. The In-House Conference, hosted by a faculty member serving as the Keynote speaker, is an opportunity for selected West Virginia University students to present their academic year's work in philosophy.
The department also hosts a National Undergraduate Philosophy Conference that is organized by the Philosophy Department’s students, where students and a Keynote speaker travel in from other colleges to present their papers. In the department’s Student and Faculty Lounge, upperclassmen volunteer regularly to offer Student Philosophy Tutoring to any who are interested in seeking help or clarification for their philosophy classes. Each semester, the department posts the Philosophy courses offered for the upcoming semester so students are able to check out our upcoming courses and our major’s requirements. If you are interested in scheduling/advising for the upcoming semester, becoming a Philosophy major, or if you just want to find out more about the department and its activities, please contact our faculty or students for more information.
