The philosophy major is excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers. In their studies, the philosophy major acquires the skills needed to extend knowledge on their own (i.e. problem solving, critical thinking); thus making them excellent candidates for several careers in law, medicine, business, journalism, teaching, civil service, and politics/public service.

Each year, the Philosophy Department awards up to three Daniel Boardman Purinton Scholarships to outstanding philosophy majors who are in their junior or senior year. Additionally, the department awards one McKay Coast Scholarship each year to a philosophy major who shows great academic promise.

The department also sponsors the WVU Philosophy Club, which represents everything that is the WVU Philosophy Department. Philosophy Club serves as the foundation of the Philosophy Department’s tight-knit community of both faculty and students and represents the Philosophy Department’s dedication to broadening knowledge outside of the classroom.

Philosophy Club is not the only activity the department sponsors. Click here for more information about the many other excellent events and activities sponsored by the WVU Philosophy department.
