Required Equipment: Cycling helmet

Suggested Equipment: Personal bicycle (note: bicycles are provided by the department on a limited basis)

Course Objectives:

The objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the sport of cycling. Designed for beginner to intermediate level cyclist, this course will cover the basic equipment, skills, and knowledge necessary to safely begin participation in the life-long activity of cycling for fitness and sport. The class will consist of both hands-on experience and classroom instruction.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify current trends in the sport of cycling.
  • Identify the different types of bicycles and explain their common uses.
  • Identify the main parts of a bicycle.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs to a bicycle.
  • Identify common cycling accessories and clothing.
  • Design an effective cycling training program that promotes life-long health and fitness.
  • Demonstrate basic cycling skills including riding in a straight line, turning/cornering, climbing, descending, braking, and riding defensively and efficiently.
  • Describe common laws pertaining to cycling.

Grading Criteria:

Final grades will be dependent upon attendance, skill demonstrations, and an examination to evaluate competency. Daily participation is mandatory.

Attendance and Participation 45% (15 class sessions X 3 points each = 45 points)

Skill Demonstrations 30% (6 skill demonstrations X 5 points each = 30 points)

Final Exam 25% (1 exam X 25 points = 25 points)

Total 100%

* Exams and skill demonstrations may not be made up except with prior approval from the instructor.

Attendance and Participation Policy

Attendance and participation in class sessions is required. Any absence in excess of one class period during the semester will result in a deduction of three points off the student’s attendance grade. Students are responsible for all course content taught during an absence. Exams, skill demonstrations, or other assignments may not be made up without prior approval from the instructor. Students who are marked absent for the first two class sessions of the course will be automatically dropped from the course unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor.

Please be on time and prepared for all class sessions. Excessive tardiness to class or early departure from class may result in an absence for that class period at the discretion of the instructor. Students who attend class but are unprepared to participate may be counted absent.

No helmet = No participation = Points lost from attendance and participation

Skill Demonstrations

Over the course of the semester students will demonstrate competency in the various skills taught in the class. The skill demonstrations will be checked off by the instructor on the date listed on the tentative course schedule, unless changes are necessary due to inclement weather, school closure, etc.

Final Exam

There will be one written exam for this course. This exam will take place on the final class date. The final exam will be comprehensive for the course and will consist of multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions.

Academic Integrity:

All students are expected to abide by the student conduct code regarding academic integrity. All violations will be reported to the Office of Judicial Affairs.

As with all sports, there are inherent risks involved with participation. It is the responsibility of the student to decide whether or not to accept these risks. Please notify the instructor if concerns arise. Students participating in off-campus trips will be required to complete a release form and emergency contact/medical information sheet prior to the trip.

Please note that all students are required to provide and wear an approved cycling helmet while participating in the cycling portions of this class.
