Course objectives: The objectives of this course are to assess and recognize the need for massage, to be able to name the most recognized styles and modalities of massage and giving a brief description of each. To open dialogue with students about the potential pros and cons of massage, available options and enable the use of resources that would further allow the student to seek more knowledge.
Expected Learning outcomes:
Week 1 Lecture: Overview of Basic Systems of the Human Body
· Define stress and why it occurs
· Discuss what physiologically occurs during stress
· Recognize the unique challenges associated with Stress reduction and the importance of fluid movement
· Identify the various safety roles of massage in health maintenance
Week 1 Lab: Chair Massage
· Define muscle groups
· Learn neck & shoulder massage
· Learn seated back massage
· Discuss the roles of reflexology and the basic
·
Week 2 Lecture: Mind-Body
· Recognize the relationship between stress, altered mental states, and illness
· Discuss Integumentary System and the Muscular System
· Define Tendons, Ligaments and Fascia
· Define food/fluid influence on the body
· Review
· Midterm
Week 2 Lab: Reflexology and Acupressure-an evidenced -based assessment
· Learn hand and arm massage
· Foot Reflexology
Week 3 Lecture: Manipulation & Body-Based Therapies
· Describe the various stretching and energy based modalities (Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong)
· Discuss the potential safety issues associated with each
· Compare the differences between Western medicine and Chinese medicine and how these ideology’s effect each
· Review
· Final
Week 3 Lab: Full body massage project completion
· Demonstrate competency by giving a forty minute massage

Grading Policy: No make-up exams except by prior arrangement with instructor
Late assignment = no assignment
Exam grading appeals in writing on the day the exam is returned.
HW Assignments Other than the project, there will be no homework assignments
Project During the course you will be practicing on persons outside of class preparing to give a full body massage lasting approximately 40 minutes, on the last day of lab.
Attendance Policy: Consistent with WVU guidelines, students absent from regularly scheduled examinations because of authorized University activities will
have the opportunity to take them at an alternate time. Make-up exams
for absences due to any other reason will be at the discretion of the
