Distance Learning Master's Degree in Physical Education Teacher Education

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Program of the School of Physical Education is focused on the preparation of physical educators (undergraduate level), master physical education teachers (graduate level), and physical education teacher educators (doctoral level). The PETE faculty's scholarly activities revolve around the study of physical education teaching and the preparation of physical educators. The PETE program has established itself as a national leader in teacher training in physical education. The program provides a unique approach to skill analysis with computer assisted interaction video instruction which enables students to gain needed hands-on experience in teaching movement and sport skills.

Dr Carson has many years of teaching experience and expertise in childhood motor development. Professor Carson has taught in the public schools of New Jersey, at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV, and at Purdue University in Indiana before coming to WVU. She has developed physical activity programs for babies, toddlers, pre school, and school age children:   Many of her programs involve the entire family. Under Dr. Carson's leadership, many of the programs have been expanded into the aquatic learning environment as well. In addition to supervising the clinical placement of many students in the programs offered by the Motor Development Center, Dr Carson teaches classes in Motor Development and Issues in Motor Behavior.

Professor Carson is a consultant for a children's television program, Bloopy's Buddies, which focuses on physical activity, nutrition, and safety in preschool children. Bloopy's Buddies is the winner of the prestigious Parent's Choice Gold Award for Best Children's Television Series.

Dr. Carson is the recipient of West Virginia University's Outstanding Teacher Award, the Eugene M. Fuller Award for the most outstanding recreation programming in West Virginia, and the PATCH award for outstanding contribution to community well-being. Professor Carson's programs have been showcased at national and international conferences. She is recognized as a child advocate, parent educator, and a teacher of teachers.

Dr. Hawkins has been a Professor of Physical Education at West Virginia University since 1980 and is currently the Graduate Coordinator of the School of Physical Education. His emphasis areas are pedagogy and the behavior analysis of teaching. His graduate degrees were completed at the Ohio State University and concerned special physical education, teacher education, special education and developmental psychology. He has published numerous papers in such periodicals as the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, and served on the editorial board for several publications. Andy has also presented papers at international meetings in such places as Israel, China, and France. He was honored in 1996 as the Midwest AAHPERD Scholar.

Dr. Housner is currently professor of teacher education and Associate Dean in the School of Physical Education. Prior to assuming responsibilities at West Virginia University, Dr. Housner was on the faculties of New Mexico State University and The University of Texas at Austin. He has served as chair of the Amercian Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, & Dance (AAHPERD) Curriculum & Instruction Academy, president of New Mexico AHPERD, as Professional Preparation chair of Southwest District AHPERD, administrative chair of  Midwest AHPERD, and as an editorial board member for the Journal  of Teaching in Physical Education. Dr. Housner has presented numerous papers at state, regional, national and international conferences and has published many papers and book chapters. For his efforts in the area of scholarship, Dr. Housner was named the 1994-1995 Southwest AHPERD Scholar.

Bruce is currently an associate professor in the teacher education program of the School of Physical Education.  A native of Virginia, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brigham Young University.  He has been with the School of Physical Education since the Fall of 1967.  He has served as president of the West Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and is currently president-elect of the Midwest District of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  Bruce teaches the rhythms and games classes in the PETE program and also teaches one section of Introduction to Physical Education.  He also teaches a clogging class for the Basic Instruction Program.  He is the coordinator of the Lifetime Activities Program within the School and serves as the faculty advisor for the WVU Folk Dance Club.  He also serves as the Activity Director for the National Youth Sports Program (for the past twelve years), a program sponsored by the NCAA and funded through the Department of Heath and Human Services, which is conducted for economically disadvantaged youth between the ages of 10-16 each summer for five weeks.
