Sport and Exercise Psychology Program
Welcome to the West Virginia University Sport and Exercise Psychology Program home page. Two degree program options are available: an undergraduate major with an emphasis in sport and exercise psychology, and a doctoral program with a specialty in sport and exercise psychology. The program is one of the oldest in the nation, and has been in existence at West Virginia University for more than 30 years.
The School of Physical Education at WVU is proud to announce that the Sport and Exercise Psychology (SEP) Program has distinguished itself as one of the premier programs in North America in conducting empirical, peer-reviewed research. For the last 11 years at the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP) National Conference, WVU's SEP program students and faculty have been recognized as presenting more empirical research at this conference than any other program worldwide. The AAASP conference is the largest conference dedicated to sport and exercise psychology in the western hemisphere. Since 1994, WVU's students and faculty have conducted 135 presentations at the national conference on topics including aggression in sport, exercise behavior, sport performance enhancement techniques, the psychology of injury rehabilitation, counseling issues in college students athletes, and many other issues related to the effective and ethical practice of sport psychology.
The doctoral program in sport and exercise psychology program is based on the scientist-practitioner model. Students can be admitted into the doctoral program with either an undergraduate degree or master’s degree. Students admitted to the doctoral program in sport psychology are also admitted to the master’s degree program in counseling. Thus, upon completion of the doctoral program, students are also awarded a master’s degree in counseling and can sit for the licensure examination as a professional counselor.
