President's Office for Social Justice

Social Justice Visiting Committee

Our Mission

From the University's Statement on Establishing Visiting Committees

"The principal function of Visiting Committees is to bring the teaching and research activities of the University into closer contact with those elements in the life of the State and the Nation to which they should be most intimately related.

It is expected that by periodic visits and conferences with the University staff, the Visiting Committees will stimulate the departments, schools, and colleges to operate with maximum effectiveness; that they will bring to the staff the points of view and needs of industry and their professions; that they will help to bridge the gap between academic procedure and professional practice; and that they will afford the instructional staff expert comment on and appraisal of their efforts."

From the President's White Paper on Social Justice at West Virginia University

"As does every visiting committee, this group of external advisors would advise the responsible administrator, the Executive Officer for Social Justice, on appropriate issues. The visiting committee should have a direct relationship with the Executive Officer..."

Visiting Committee Purposes

"The purposes of this group include to reflect to the campus broad-based input on contemporary issues relevant to social justice and serves a sounding board as the institution examines these issues and charts its course. In addition, committee members will be advocates for the causes of social justice, help foster the values of fairness, respect and civility, and promote the celebration of the differences found among the people of WVU and society while affirming the bonds that bring people together."
