Joshua Williamson has extensive professional credits as a freelance lighting designer, including designs for Arkansas Repertory Theatre, The Public Theatre in Lewiston, Maine, The Theatre at Monmouth, West Virginia Public Theatre, and the West Virginia Dance Company. A brief list of some of his lighting design credits include: Spitfire Grill, Terra Nova, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Hedda Gabler, Proof, The Colored Museum, My Fair Lady, the premiere of Manny’s War, and the world-premiere of the opera Mirabell: Books of Number. At WVU, Williamson has designed lights for The Ice Wolf, Bat Boy, Oleanna, Into the Woods, Father Uxbridge Wants to Marry, The Laramie Project, Medea, and It’s a Wonderful Life. Favorite sound design credits include: Bat Boy, Manny’s War, It’s a Wonderful Life, Smoke on the Mountain, and Twelfth Night.

Prior to joining the faculty at West Virginia University in 2001, Williamson taught lighting design and technical production at Bates College. While at Bates, he served as Resident Lighting Designer and Technical Director, as well as Production Manager and Lighting Designer for the Bates College Modern Dance Company, working with lighting designer Roma Flowers and choreographer Doug Elkins.

Williamson’s current research builds on his background in designing for dance, and explores the integration of moving lights, choreography, and dancers into a symbiotic performance medium. His research has led to the recent production, emotion[al], written and performed by Williamson and Jessica Morgan, who is assistant professor of stage movement at WVU.

Williamson is a member of USITT and a journeyman member of IATSE Local 578.
