International Education

Administrative Offices for WVU Students

THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGAMS (Academic Affairs), promotes the globalization of teaching, research, and service through study abroad programs, collaborative international research and formal international partnerships. OIP is also the administrative home for the WV Council of International Programs, Amizade (with the Center for Civic Engagement), the Fulbright Program, interdisciplinary development teams, and external grant funded international projects. West Virginia University presently has 76 linkages in 39 countries. Twenty-nine (29) of these include study abroad exchange programs.

Study Abroad -- In the 2005-06 academic year, 568 WVU students studied abroad for credit. They studied in 40 countries and for varying lengths of time. Study abroad has increasingly become integrated into WVU academic programs and is becoming a popular study option for students in many disciplines. For example, Interior Design and the Executive MBA Programs now require study abroad and study abroad is now well integrated in the Honors College and International Studies Program (see below). WVU now offers two new types of programs: ISEP: InternationalStudent Exchange Program: http://www.wvu.edu/~intlprog/isep.html and the Mountaineer Programs Abroad: http://www.wvu.edu/~intlprog/mountaineerprograms.htm. Next year, WVU will launch a new Eco-tourism study abroad consortium with multiple partners and a study abroad experience will also be required. We will also be in our third year of the exciting WVU Design in Italy Program being developed in Milan and Tuscany. There are four broad types of study abroad opportunities developed and promoted at West Virginia University: 1) reciprocal exchange programs; 2) faculty-led programs; 3) affiliated programs; and 4) international service learning courses.

WV Council of International Programs (WV-CIP) -- Since 1970, the WV Council of International Programs has coordinated an annual international professional program for 10 mid-career professionals from around the world. As part of this program, they receive a 4-month professional placement starting each August. To date, 330 professionals have participated and visited Morgantown.

Amizade -- The WVU-Amizade Global Service-Learning Consortium encourages intercultural exploration through community-driven service-learning courses in 11 countries through 13 community partnerships.
