CRANE OPERATIONS POLICY

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to ensure compliance with 29 CFR 1910.179 and protect all faculty, staff, and students from any hazardous conditions or situations while operating or working with the cranes owned and operated by WVU.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all University employees engaged in job activities involving cranes at any location on property or spaces under the substantial control of WVU, including those on the regional campuses.

POLICY

All individuals (faculty, staff, students, or outside contractors) who operate cranes at any location on WVU property or involving such spaces under the substantial control of WVU shall be properly trained in their safe operation, maintenance, and inspection.

PROCEDURE

Procedure development for crane operation safety training rests with Environmental Health and Safety. Procedure development for usage rests with West Virginia University Departments who own and/or operate cranes.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

All employees are charged with providing full support to this policy. It is the responsibility of the Dean or Director to implement and maintain this policy within their college, department, or unit. The Environmental Health and Safety Office, at 293-3792 or P.O. Box 6551, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office, West Virginia University
