ELECTRICAL SAFETY POLICY

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to ensure compliance with 29 CFR 1910.303-307 and 1926.403-407 and employee safety while working with or in the vicinity of sources of electricity.

SCOPE

The requirements of this policy are applicable to all University employees, contractors and students while working at West Virginia University, including those on the regional campuses.

POLICY

West Virginia University personnel who use/have contact with electrical equipment in their course of duty shall be protected from electrical hazards by having all electrical equipment grounded and insulated appropriately and by utilizing approved lockout-tagout procedures to prevent injuries from unexpected energization of electrical equipment. In addition, to protect West Virginia University students, faculty, staff, and visitors from the hazards of water and electricity, all electrical outlets which are located within six feet of a source of water shall be ground fault circuit interrupter protected.

PROCEDURE

Procedure development for electrical safety training rests with Environmental Health and Safety. Procedure development for maintenance, repair, and design of electrical sources rests with the West Virginia University Physical Plants (Main Physical Plant, Health Sciences Physical Plant, and Housing & Residence Life Maintenance/Housekeeping).

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

All employees are charged with providing full support to this policy. It is the responsibility of the Dean or Director to implement and maintain this policy within their college, department, or unit. The Environmental Health and Safety Office, at 293-3792 or P.O. Box 6551, is available to answer any questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office, West Virginia University.
