EXCAVATION SAFETY POLICY
PURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to ensure compliance with 29 CFR 1926.651-652 and Subpart P and personnel safety when working in an excavation or trench.
SCOPE
This policy applies to any University employee, who is performing work inside an excavation or trench that is four (4) feet or deeper. These requirements only apply to excavations less than 20' in depth. Any excavation exceeding 20' in depth must have an approved protective system designed by a Registered Professional Engineer. The scope of this policy extends to the regional campuses.
POLICY
West Virginia University personnel engaged in trenching or excavation work shall be protected from the hazards associated with this work through the application of shoring, sloping, or other methods as approved by OSHA standards.
PROCEDURE
Procedure development for excavation safety training rests with Environmental Health and Safety. Procedure development for usage rests with West Virginia University Departments who perform trenching/excavation operations.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION
All employees are charged with providing full support to this policy. It is the responsibility of the Dean or Director to implement and maintain this policy within their college, department, or unit. The Environmental Health and Safety Office, at 293-3792 or P.O. Box 6551, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION
The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office, West Virginia University.
