HEARING CONSERVATION POLICY

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to ensure compliance with 29 CFR 1910.95, control noise hazards within the workplace and prevent permanent hearing loss to employees as a result of exposure.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all University employees engaged in noise producing activities greater than 85 dBa at any location on WVU property or involving such spaces under the substantial control of WVU, including those on the regional campuses.

POLICY

All West Virginia University students, employees, visitors, and outside contractor personnel who perform activities conducive to noise induced hearing loss shall be protected from these hazards by ensuring that appropriate hearing protection is provided.

PROCEDURE

Procedure development rests with Environmental Health and Safety as outlined in the Hearing Conservation Program.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

All employees are charged with providing full support to this policy. It is the responsibility of the Dean or Director to implement and maintain this policy within their college, department, or unit. The Environmental Health and Safety Office, at 293-3792 or P.O. Box 6551, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office, West Virginia University.
