LOCKOUT-TAGOUT POLICYPURPOSE
The purpose of this policy is to ensure compliance with 29 CFR 1910.147 and personnel safety when working on or in the vicinity of a potential energy source.
SCOPE
This policy applies to the control of energy during servicing and/or maintenance of machines and equipment. Although lockout/tagout deals primarily with electrical energy sources, there are many sources of potential energy:
Electrical
Chemical
Thermal
Mechanical (rotating saw, PTO shaft)
Pneumatic (involving gases, especially air)
Hydraulic (involving fluids, especially water)
Potential (pressure, gravity)
The scope of this policy extends to the regional campuses.
POLICY
West Virginia University workers engaged in work which poses hazards from identified energy sources shall utilize approved lockout tagout procedures to prevent injuries form unexpected energization of said equipment.
PROCEDURE
Procedure development rests with Environmental Health and Safety as outlined in Environmental Health and Safetys Lockout-Tagout Manual.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION
All employees are charged with providing full support to this policy. It is the responsibility of the Dean or Director to implement and maintain this policy within their college, department, or unit. The Environmental Health and Safety Office, at 293-3792 or P.O. Box 6551, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION
The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Environmental Health and Safety Office, West Virginia University.
