DISPOSAL OF FREON-CONTAINING EQUIPMENT POLICY

PURPOSE

To safely dispose of freon-containing equipment as outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), section 608 and following guidelines/recommendations as outlined by the WVU Department of Environmental Health and Safety for facilities and equipment covered under the normal operating mission for Physical Plant.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all University faculty, staff, and students that work in WVU facilities that are maintained by the Physical Plant.

POLICY

Physical Plant will use technicians for the removal, disposal and other measures as may be required to address the use, maintenance and handling of freon-containing equipment in facilities serviced by Physical Plant. Under no circumstance are non-certified technicians to engage in any activity that may cause the release of freon. Equipment containing freon may not be surplussed without properly disposing of freon. Departmentally owned equipment disposals may be charged a fee for the removal service as necessary.

All questions regarding legislation, legal responsibilities and/or department obligations will be forwarded through the WVU Department of Environmental Health and Safety. A work request for Physical Plant support services or clarification on Physical Plant responsibilities may be initiated through the Physical Plant Help Desk at 293-4357.

PROCEDURE

The Directors of the Physical Plant and the WVU Department of Environmental Health and Safety will be jointly responsible for procedure development.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

The responsibility for implementation of this policy rests with the Resource Management section of Physical Plant, WVU Deans/Directors/Chairpersons/Building Supervisor(s), and the WVU Departments of Environmental Health and Safety and Inventory Control. Physical Plant, at 293-4357 or P.O. Box 6570, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Physical Plant.
