PHYSICAL PLANT BODY FLUID
PROTECTION/HANDLING PROGRAM POLICY

PURPOSE

To prevent direct exposure to blood and other body fluids and possible diseases contained therein, and to safely handle clean up of these fluids in WVU facilities.

SCOPE

This policy applies to all labor supplied for or in support of University faculty, staff, and students who work in WVU facilities that are maintained by the Physical Plant.

POLICY

The Physical Plant, in conjunction with Environmental Health and Safety, does not anticipate foreseeable routine exposure to blood and other body fluids during the performance of routine duties. However, precautions are in place under the guidance of Environmental Health and Safety to address safe operating practices. In the event of known exposures, questions on exposures or general information on exposure, Environmental Health and Safety should be contacted for guidance. Normal cleaning and maintenance activities will be handled by contacting the Physical Plant Help Desk at 293-4357.

PROCEDURE

The Directors of the Physical Plant and WVU Department of Environmental Health and Safety will be jointly responsible for procedure development.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION

The responsibility for implementation of this policy rests with the Resource Management/Campus Services sections of Physical Plant, WVU Department of Environmental Health and Safety and the WVU Deans/Directors and Chairpersons. Physical Plant, at 293-4357 or P.O. Box 6570, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION

The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Physical Plant.
