SPACE ALLOCATION - ADA REQUIREMENTS POLICY
PURPOSE
The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that West Virginia University develop a Transition Plan when structural changes to existing facilities are necessary in order to make a program, service, or activity accessible to people with disabilities and/or to ensure new facilities are constructed in accordance with ADAAG guidelines. The use of structural modifications as a provision for accessibility is only required when the initial evaluation of the program eliminates any accommodation or alternative.
SCOPE
This policy applies to all University employees, students, and visitors on University property.
POLICY
The ADA Office acts as a clearinghouse for all issues related to program access, providing the continuity, minimum requirements, and intent of the law.
Physical Plant Planning, Design and Construction provides campus-wide staff support and direction to ensure the capital plan and outgoing space allocation activities constantly work to increase program accessibility.
Physical Plant Planning, Design and Construction maintains and expands a master database of a Program-based Physical Survey Analysis as part of the campus Facilities Information System. Elimination of barriers via construction projects shall be updated as part of the financial reporting project close-out procedure; i.e., it shall be the responsibility for Physical Plant, Housing and Residence Life, etc., to provide updated information to Physical Plant Planning Design and Construction
PROCEDURE
Procedure development rests with Physical Plant Planning, Design and Construction.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPLEMENTATION
The responsibility for implementation of this policy rests with Physical Plant Planning, Design and Construction. Physical Plant, at 293-4357 or P.O. Box 6570, is available to answer questions or provide additional information regarding this policy.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR INTERPRETATION
The responsibility for interpretation of this policy rests with the Director of the Physical Plant.
