DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING POLICY
DOT COVERED EMPLOYEES AND SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITIONS

PURPOSE

To outline the requirements and guidelines used by West Virginia University in order to comply with the Omnibus Transportation Testing Act of 1991 and for the testing of certain safety-sensitive positions.

SCOPE

This policy applies to West Virginia University employees, including those on regional campuses, who are required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and for employees in safety-sensitive positions.  This policy does not replace the Drug-Free Workplace Policy and Procedures.  All employees of WVU are required to comply with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988.

POLICY

WVU has a vital interest in providing a safe workplace environment free from drug and alcohol abuse.  The University’s objective is to provide a safe and productive environment and to make it clear that substance and alcohol abuse will not be tolerated in our workplace.  WVU will comply with the requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for all positions covered under its regulations.  Other safety-sensitive positions will follow essentially the same guidelines and procedures set forth under the federal DOT standards for the sake of consistency and effectiveness in managing the drug and alcohol program.

WVU intends to make every reasonable effort to provide intervention and access to rehabilitation while also establishing a safe work environment.
