General
Information The Monongalia County Master Gardeners were organized in November 1997. The first class of Master Gardeners completed their training classes in March 1998 then met to organize and formulate a direction for their volunteer activities and other ways they could share their experience with the public. They set the course for the Master Gardener classes yet to come. Since the first class, five additional classes have either completed requirements for certification or are in the process of becoming certified. The Master Gardener Program was created by University Extension Services to meet the enormous increase in requests from home gardeners for horticultural information. The first Master Gardener Program was started in 1972 in Washington State. Since then, the program has spread to 48 states including West Virginia. |
To become a Certified Master Gardener and a member of the Monongalia County Master Gardener Organization, a person must successfully complete 30 hours of classroom education and then give 30 hours of approved volunteer work to their community within one year of completing the classroom work. In order to retain Certified Master Gardener status, a person must complete 6 hours of educational classes and 12 hours of volunteer hours on a yearly basis thereafter. For further information, contact the Monongalia County Extension Office at 304/291-7201.
Monongalia County Master Gardener classes are available to all persons without regard to race, color, sex, disability, religion, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, or national origin.
Business meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The site of meetings is the WVU Greenhouse on the Evansdale Campus. Educational lectures follow the business meetings and are open to the public.
