Scab of crabapple is caused by the fungus Venturia inaequalis. Scab of pyracantha (firethorn) is caused by a closely related fungus, Fusicladium pirinum var. pyracanthae.

Symptoms

  • Spotting of Leaves - olive, brown, and velvety in appearance.
  • Premature Defoliation - leaves turn yellow and drop.
  • Unsightly Scabby Spots on the Fruit - circular, olive-green spots that become brown or black and corky.

Symptoms on pyracantha are similar to those on crabapple. The berries of pyracantha have scabby spots and are shriveled.

The scab fungi overwinter in infected fallen leaves. In the spring, leaves and fruit are infected by the fungus.
