The History of the Powerful PI MU Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha

The 1st Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. began at Cornell University in 1906, and since then hundreds of chapters have been chartered throughout the United States.  The one chapter that is equally important is our chapter, The "POWERFUL" PI MU Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha.

The late Brother Anthony Akers and Brother Eddie Karim started PI MU chapter on September 4, 1984.  Brother Akers and Brother Karim arrived on the campus of West Virginia University in the early 1980's after leaving Boston University.  Upon arrival they noticed that there were other forms of Greek life on the campus, but none to which they could relate, so they decided to start a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha to bring some light to the dull campus.

The Alpha light began in the Spring of 1981 at the Sigma Chapter.  This is the same chapter that the late Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a member of.  Brother Akers and Brother Karim began to put their plan into action, and before they knew it, the Alpha Light they brought with them from the Sigma chapter was finally shinning bright on the campus of West Virginia University on the 4th day of September, 1984.

Since the start of The "POWERFUL" PI MU Chapter, the brothers of PI MU have been heavily involved in community projects and various services and volunteer work.  Throughout the years the chapter has endeavored to raise for many different local charities, worked closely with the Ronald McDonald house, Boy's and Girl's Club, and the children's ward at local hospitals.

The "POWERFUL" PI MU Chapter has used its "POWER" to help uplift the community, each other and those who are to come.  PI MU Chapter has a history of being a dominant force in stepping at West Virginia University in our crowning titles as Step Show champions in '93, '94, '95, '97, '98, '99, '00, '01, '02.   Other wins came at the University of Pittsburgh and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
