West Virginia University Hypnosis Study Group

The West Virginia University Hypnosis Study Group has been in existence for more than 20 years and became a component society of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis in 1992. It is a "loosely" organized group dedicated to learning more about hypnosis and its various applications to various clinical populations. The membership represents various professions including psychologists and other mental health counselors, physicians, dentists, and other health care providers. Through monthly meetings and other planned events, active members from all over the state as well as from Pennsylvania and Maryland use the Study Group as a way to hone their hypnotic skills and share their expertise. A schedule of semester events is available at this Web site as well as being mailed to interested individuals.

In addition to these meetings, the Study Group sponsors two major training events each year. An annual, three-day hypnosis training workshop is held each fall. It is titled "The 'ART' in the science of Healing," and this fall's workshop will be our 19th. In the spring, the group sponsors a one-day utilization workshop. This workshop was recently renamed in honor of Kay F. Thompson, D.D.S., who for more than 20 years acted as a mentor and consultant to the group. Dr. Thompson was an internationally recognized practitioner and teacher of hypnosis. The spring workshop is now titled The Kay F. Thompson Memorial Symposium. Information on both of these training opportunities is available through this web site. Additional information can be obtained from Dr. Marion Kostka, Study Group Coordinator, via email (mkostka@mail.wvu.edu) , at 304-293-4431, or by contacting the Carruth Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, West Virginia University, P.O. Safe Zone

Safe Zone at West Virginia University is a program that identifies and trains gay-affirmative faculty and staff to provide support and resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, questioning, and transgendered (GLBQT) students and employees. Persons nominated on the basis of being accepting and supportive of GLBQT persons are invited to participate in special training on the subject of sexual orientation and gender identity, and to make a commitment to be available to assist GLBQT members of the university community. They are identified by Safe Zone symbols on their doors or workstations.
