Major and Career Testing

.:: Major & Career Decisions ::.

The Carruth Center offers two tests that can help you with major and career decision-making. Both are available on a walk-in basis, daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. We do charge fees for this testing (see below). We accept cash or personal checks, and payment is due at the time of the testing.

Testing is often helpful when you experience one of the following:

  • No clear idea of what to major in
  • Academic difficulties in a planned major
  • Frequent switching of majors
  • You think "What do I do with this major?"

The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) is the principal tool we offer to help you.

What it is. The SII measures your interests in a broad range of occupations, work activities, leisure activities, and school subjects, and compares your pattern of interests to those of people in a wide variety of fields who enjoy their work. It also provides useful information about your preferred work styles and learning style.

What you get. With the testing you get two free counseling sessions, one to orient you to the SII and a second to give you personalized feedback about what your results mean.

What it costs. $25 for the Newly Revised Strong and Skills Confidence Profile + Interpretive Report, which you get to keep after your counselor discusses it with you.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is another important tool we offer.

What it is. The MBTI provides a useful way of understanding yourself by looking at your personality preferences—how you take in and organize information, recharge, and structure your life. Many people like to take the MBTI alone, but it is especially useful in conjunction with the Strong Interest Inventory. Together, they can help you make even more informed major and career choices.

What you get. With the testing you get two free counseling sessions, one to orient you to the MBTI (or the combined MBTI and SII) and a second to give you personalized feedback about what your results mean.

What it costs. $15 for The MBTI Profile Report and $20 for the MBTI Narrative Report. You get to keep the report after your counselor discusses it with you.
