February 20,
1922 -- Delta Sigma Sigma was granted a charter by
the Delta Gamma Fraternity.
February 28,
1922 -- 31 girls were the first initiated in to the
Alpha Xi Chapter
-- DG became the fifth national fraternity on the WVU
campus.
1939 -- A
group of Delta Gammas found the perfect lot of the new
chapter house, located at 652 Price Street. The lot was
purchased for $3500.00. Alpha Xi has only $1200.00 to
pay towards the lot, but with a loan from the National
Council, a local bank, they begin to build the chapter
house, but could exceed $32,000.
March 1940
-- The house was purchased, but work could begin until
that summer. The seniors were determined to live in the
house, continually pushed for its completion.
-- Also
at the time the house was built, Olivia Kendrick paid
for the crest which is embedded in the chimney facing
Price Street.
May 1941 --
The house was finished.
May 1944 --
A group of members approached the House Corporation in
regard to buying the lot immediately above the property,
but at the time there was no money to purchase it.
1954 -- The
university acquired the property around the chapter
house. The University president was very cooperative
and gave us the property behind our house to establish a
good sized parking lot. The deal included grading and
gravel in exchange for permission for contractors to
park equipment there during the building of Arnold Hall
Dormitory. -- As the quota system for sororities
increased and WVU experienced rapid growth, the house
became inadequate for only 20 girls.
1963 --
The Alpha Xi chapter
commissioned a builder to add rooms for 15 more girls,
remodel and expand dining and living room, a full size
kitchen, new bathrooms, and house parent quarters.
-- The house parent quarters are furnished and dedicated
in honor of Nell Leonian, a long time house corporation
president.
After the addition to the house in 1963, Dr. Paul Price
had the stone wall below the parking lot built as a
memorial to his wife and Alpha Xi alumnae, Helen Tapp
Price. The street which the house presides, Price
Street, is named for the Price family.-- The anchor
which is displaying on our front lawn was donated to the
chapter by the United States Government. The anchor
came from the U.S.S. West Virginia.
