Delta Gamma was founded by
Anna Boyd Ellington, Mary Comfort Leonard, and Eva Webb
Dodd in 1873 in Oxford, Mississippi, at the Lewis School
for Girls near the University of Mississippi. Delta
Gamma uses the term Fraternity because the word is
derived from the Greek derivative "phratres" meaning
"groups of people with similar interests" |
|
|
 |
1885 the Cream Rose was
designated as the Fraternity flower at Convention in
Madison, Wisconsin. Convention determined Fraternity
would continue to be used in reference to Delta Gamma
rather than the newer term, sorority. |

The original badge of our
Founders was the letter "H". This symbolized Hope, which
was our Founder's Watchword. |
|
|
 |
In 1877, the "H" badge was
replaced by the Anchor, the traditional symbol for Hope.
Only initiated members may wear the official badge.

 |
Woman who are pledged to
join Delta Gamma, wear the new member pin. The white
shield has the letters Pi Alpha inscribed on it.

 |
The original fraternity
mascot "Hannah" was a pigtailed blond wearing a short
skirt and a sailor blouse. No one knows when the Raggedy
Ann doll became the symbol for Hannah. |
