Whitewater - South Branch (US 220 - Smoke Hole Picnic Area)

Description

This is an extremely fun class III section that flows through the first five miles of the spectacular Smoke Hole Canyon. This run is perfect for an intermediate paddlers first try at a small river/creek experience that includes fairly continuous rapids. It provides good practice of eddy hopping and boat scouting. Directions from Morgantown

Take I-68 E to Rt. 42 S at Friendsville, MD. Follow Rt. 42 S until it intersects with Rt. 219 S at McHenry, MD. Stay on Rt. 219 S through Oakland, MD to Rt. 50 E. Take Rt. 50 E to Rt. 42 S at Mt Storm. Go 13.5 miles to Petersburg. Take 220 south for about 16 miles to Smoke Hole Rd (cr 2). The put-in is just downstream of the 220 bridge. The take-out is about 5 miles north on Smoke Hole Rd. at the small bridge.
