Curt Peterson is responsible for stimulating research activities by faculty working in the physical, biological, and medical sciences and in engineering, and in other disciplines as required for developing multidisciplinary research. A particular focus is on developing projects involving diverse faculty, and obtaining support for that research.

Duties include serving as the principal investigator of research cutting across colleges or involving a large number of investigators, being the principal contact with potential federal, state, and industry funding sources with respect to new initiatives, and marketing the competency of the University research program to potential sponsors.
