Mobile Fire Training Unit: Bring the Latest Fire Service Training to Your Doorstep
Firefighters Learn Through Real Fire, Smoke
When seconds count, firefighters’ training matters. With sights, sounds, and flames, the Mobile Fire Training Unit is bringing cutting-edge live-fire training experiences to West Virginia volunteer and career firefighters. The high-tech unit – the first of its kind in size and capabilities – is the latest addition to West Virginia University Fire Service Extension’s proud legacy of training local firefighters.
Firefighters entering the unit are challenged
with smoke, flames, sights, sounds and obstacles of commercial
and residential structural fires.
Training sessions are led by WVU Fire Service Extension
instructors. The safe system is controlled from an
observation room by a lead instructor who can shut
down the operations and ventilate the unit’s
interior within 45 to 60 seconds.
Environmentally sound, the Mobile Fire Training Unit is fueled by clean-burning propane. It generates benign smoke that does not disturb the community.
The
Mobile Fire Training Unit debuted May 5-6, 2007, at
a fire school at the Putnam Career and Technical Center
along Route 62 in Eleanor, West Virginia. The high-tech
unit was the focus of the weekend-long training.
