One of West Virginia University Fire Service Extension’s (WVU-FSE) goals is to raise the skill level of West Virginia’s firefighters so that they meet national consensus standards, including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and National Fire Academy (NFA) requirements.

During 2005, WVU-FSE certified 593 individuals in 15 different certification levels, including firefighter, driver/operator, two levels of fire officer, three fire instructor levels, fire brigade, and five certification levels that deal with hazardous materials.

WVU-FSE issued more than 200 certifications for Fire Officer I, which meets NFPA standards for a first line supervisor. The course introduces students to the basic concepts of management and supervision by concentrating on topics, such as organizational structure, communication skills, human resource management, public relations, planning, emergency service delivery, and safety.
