American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)

Construction Safety Committee

  • The Need: IH's & contractors can use task and activity exposure info to control exposures and comply with regulations.

  • Action: Develop a silica exposure database for the construction industry. Database is to be built by shared information (data) that is submitted by different contributing groups. Data can be submitted directly on the template or in other formats and WVU will enter (within resource limits). Confidentiality of data will be protected using Human Subjects Procedures at WVU. Data will be analyzed, and estimates of task and activity exposure levels will be made available on the web. Finally, WVU will eventually, move the database to the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) web page when feasible.

  • Benefits: These will include making the data available to assist IH's/contractors in protecting workers from silica exposures, provide data for policy or regulatory processes, develop a guide by ACGIH Construction Committee with task or activity based exposure estimates, and demonstrate feasibility of this collection method to assist in data sharing for other fields as well.
