Available Courses

The WVU Safety and Health Extension (S&HE) offers quality medical education and life support training to people all over the United States through the Shirley M. Kimble Training Center. These courses cover a wide variety of topics for healthcare professionals and community members. Below is a list of courses offered by the Shirley M. Kimble Training Center.


Courses for Prehospital Providers

Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS): Instructs the proper sequence from the initial evaluation to the stabilization of a trauma patient. Pediatric BTLS trains providers to assess and manage pediatric trauma patients in the pre-hospital setting.

Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers (PEPP): PEPP represents a comprehensive source of prehospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. It will teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children.

Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS): The practical format of this hands-on AMLS course gives students the ability to integrate the knowledge presented into their current practice. Attendees will: Apply critical thinking skills to integrate pathophysiology with the assessment findings of a medical patient; Determine and differentiate between actual and potential patient problems; Advance the provider's ability to conduct a competent medical examination utilizing proper diagnostic skills, critical thinking and interventions; Advance the provider's ability to utilize problem-solving strategies in interventions and management alternatives; Advanced the provider's ability to communicate the pertinent findings and interventions to the receiving faculty.

Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS): The proportion of the elderly in society today is greater than ever before, and growing faster than any other segment of our population. Current indications are that approximately 34% of calls for emergency medical services, or 3.4 million annual emergency responses involve patients over the age of 60. GEMS represents the most credible and complete source of prehospital medical information for the emergency treatment of older adults.

Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS): This course employs an all-hazards approach to disaster preparedness and response.  Practical approaches to multiple casualty incident management are included.  Visit the BDLS website at http://www.bdls.com for more information.


Life Support Courses for Healthcare Professionals

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS): Trains healthcare providers to recognize and manage infant and child cardiopulmonary arrest.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS): Healthcare providers learn the latest resuscitation guidelines to diagnose and treat acute cardiac disorders.

Public Education Courses

American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid and CPR Course: Provides training in first aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use.

Safe Sitter: Medically accurate course for children ages 11-13. Students learn how to screen job requests, how to react in an emergency, what to do if a child is choking, how to handle problem behavior, rescue breathing and much more. Course is very interactive and students through role-play and hand-on activities. Visit http://www.safesitter.org for more information.

CPR Courses:

Healthcare Provider: CPR course designed for individuals who work in healthcare. Students learn basic cardiovascular life support skills for the adult, infant and child cardiac arrest victim.Students are instructed in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), and the use of pocket mask and bag valve mask for ventilations. Participants receive a 2-year certification card.  For more information visit. http://www.aha-cpr.org.

Heartsaver CPR: CPR course designed to teach lay rescuers (general public, daycare workers, teachers, security guards, etc) the basic life support skills for cardiac arrest victims. Course can be set up three ways: Adult CPR, pediatric CPR, or both adult and pediatric. Course teaches students how to recognize and react to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, choking, heart attack, and stroke.

CPR for Family and Friends: CPR course designed to teach the general public the basic skills of CPR. Students learn how to recognize and react to emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, choking, and cardiac arrest. Students can choose between three courses: Adult CPR, Infant and Child CPR, or Adult, Infant and Child CPR. There is no written test.

Heartsaver CPR in schools CPR course designed for middle school and high school age students. Course teaches students to recognize and react to emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, choking, and cardiac arrest.Students learn adult CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, rescue breathing, and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
