Bringing home national honors is getting to be “old hat” for 4-H land and homesite judging teams in Barbour County. The 2007 team recently earned reserve championships (second place) in both land judging and homesite evaluation competitions in Oklahoma City, Okla.

With a perfect score, team member Heather Hart was the highest-scoring individual in homesite evaluation; she also placed sixth in land judging. The other team members— Jennings Critchfield, Amanda Duckworth and Jeremy Lach—also placed in the top 25 scorers.

This year’s team was the 12th one coached by Roger Nestor, WVU Extension agent in Barbour County. In land judging, the 12 Barbour County 4-H teams have won four championships and three reserve championships. In homesite evaluation, Nestor’s teams have won four championships and one reserve championship. Since 2003, Barbour County’s teams have been among the top three teams in the United States.

Roane County’s team placed fifth in both land judging and homesite evaluation this year. Team members Dustin Kelley, Heather McDonald, Tonya Raines and Jason Shamblin were coached by Mike Shamblin, Clay County WVU Extension agent.

In addition to the 4-H teams, three West Virginia teams participated in the FFA national land judging and homesite competitions. Ravenswood High School’s team, coached by Jason Miihlbach, won both contests. Derrick Dillon was the top-scoring individual in both land judging and homesite evaluation. Other members of that championship team were Michelle Baldwin, Jonathan Fletcher and Josh Hafer.

Two other West Virginia teams participated in the national FFA competitions. The
Marion County team placed fifth in homesite and 10th in land judging, and the Taylor County team placed seventh in homesite and 22nd in land judging.
