Braxton County Points of Pride

- Super Pantry: Through the Braxton Community Coalition, agencies presented
a series of Super Pantry programs in four communities for people who use the
food pantries or were referred by the Department of Human Resources. Participants
learned about nutrition, budgeting, and food preparation and took home ingredients
to prepare a meal. The Presbytery of West Virginia-Hunger Action Team funded
the food purchases.
- Beekeeping: The Braxton County Beekeepers are teaching 4-H'ers how
to care for and feed honey bees and not to be afraid of them. Plans are to
develop a state 4-H beekeeping project.
- Food Handlers: In 2001, 178 food service industry employees attended
the food handlers/food safety training sponsored by Extension and the local
health department.
- Camping: Eighty-six youths had fun while learning during the county
4-H camp. About 30 adults taught classes, offered assemblies, and helped with
special activities.
- 4-H: With the new Little Birch club, Braxton has eight community
4-H clubs and one special-interest club, an award-winning heritage dance group.
- Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS): The eight clubs have
110 members (including four men). They conduct many community projects and
financially support 4-H and two partial college scholarships. Members reached
600 people with cancer information on the first day of October, Cancer Awareness
Month.
