Cabell County Points of Pride

- Cabell County offers the Family Nutrition Program for limited-resource
individuals and families. Thelma Thacker, nutrition outreach instructor, offers
topics on nutrition, meal preparation and food safety.
- Agent Rickman collaborates with the Joslin Diabetes Center, St. Mary’s
Hospital, churches, libraries, and other health agencies to conduct Dining
With Diabetes Cooking Schools that help people manage their diabetes.
- Cabell County’s Community Educational Outreach Service clubs conduct
many community service projects and monthly study topics, and participate
in county and state conferences and community development activities.
- Cabell County is piloting Cardiac Fun for fifth-graders who are at risk
for heart disease. St. Mary’s Hospital heart personnel are collaborating
with Extension in Cabell, Wayne, and Lincoln counties.
- Membership in the county’s 4-H and youth programs increased from 250
to 777. Children participate in 17 clubs and 4-H camps led by 151 adult volunteers.
- The six-week Energy Express summer program has served more than 4,600 meals
while inspiring children’s gains in reading fluency and mentors’
commitment to community service.
- The Veterans’ Oral History Program’s curriculum, which introduces
youth to America’s heroes, was developed by Agent Cobb for use in the
2003 4-H camps.
- More than 750,000 people receive the Agent Marra’s educational messages
through TV and radio programs and newspaper articles each week.
- The WSAZ Home and Garden Show attracted nearly 19,000, with more than 740
adults participating in the county agent’s gardening and landscaping
live TV broadcast.
