Gilmer County Points of Pride

- More than 270 youths are involved in community, school-based, and special-interest
4-H clubs led by some 70 volunteers. Members participate in officers’
training school, visual presentations, 4-H soccer, judging competitions, the
First-Year Camper and Cloverbud Overnighter, and county 4-H camp.
- 4-H and FFA members exhibit projects at the Gilmer County Farm Show. Last
year, 4-H and FFA members sold more than $15,000 worth of market animals.
Volunteers raised nearly $2,000 at the show to support 4-H, FFA, and community
organizations and projects.
- Five Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) clubs with 95 members
studied health, food safety, consumer education, and leadership topics. CEOS
members provide many hours of volunteer service to community groups.
- Educational workshops at regional dinner meetings covered extended grazing,
beef cattle nutrition, and forest management.
- Diabetics and their family members attended three sessions of the Gilmer
Dining with Diabetes cooking school. Participants increased their use of artificial
sweeteners, cut down on salt and fats, and used more herbs and spices.
- We provide information on a variety of subjects including nutrition, pest
identification and control, livestock management, gardening, and landscaping
through one-on-one contacts and mass media programs.
- We mail newsletters to 600 families monthly; 200 families requested the
Extension Garden Calendar.
