Grant County Points of Pride

- Grant County youths participate in projects ranging from photography to
sheep in their 4-H clubs. They take part in local, state, and national camps
and events designed to develop leadership and encourage community service.
The 4-H clubs, guided by volunteer leaders, involve nearly 260 youths.
- One hundred four Grant County children participated in Energy Express, a
six-week summer program that helps participants improve their reading. Children
worked in small groups under the guidance of a college-student-age mentor.
Children received 10 meals weekly and participated in nutrition, hygiene,
and fitness activities. Extension coordinated the coalition of local citizens
and agencies that organized the program.
- Nearly 200 Community Educational Outreach Service members helped with many
community service projects and offered educational programs to volunteers.
- A Diabetic Cooking School, held in cooperation with Hardy County, reached
40 people with recipe demonstrations and lectures on planning healthful meals.
Participants’ evaluations indicated positive changes were made in using more
artificial sweeteners, eating more vegetables and fruit, and decreasing the
fat and salt in diets.
- All Petersburg High School seniors participated in the High School Financial
Planning Program coordinated by Extension and taught by volunteers. Youths
learned to make sound financial decisions.
