Harrison County Points of Pride

- Nineteen college-student mentors at three sites instructed 148 kindergarten
through fifth-grade students enrolled in Energy Express, a six-week summer
reading program.
- Extension provided smokeless tobacco education to 630 third-graders in
nine elementary schools.
- A weeklong county camp, held at WVU Jackson's Mill State 4-H Conference
Center, offered more than 70 classes and educational programs to 225 youths.
- Extension addresses literacy by promoting storybook aprons and purposeful
reading lists; we also train Read Aloud volunteers who read to schoolchildren
across Harrison County.
- The Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) has 742 volunteers in
40 clubs. They participate in community service projects and educational enrichment
programs.
- Child care providers receive training and resources through workshops, newsletters,
conferences, and meetings.
- Beef cattle producers attended eight educational programs on marketing
alliances, genetics, drought management, and herd health. Litter from the
Potomac River Basin is being used in the county as fertilizer.
