Jackson County Points of Pride

- More than 1,000 landowners attended programs on pesticide recertification,
farm management, beef and sheep production, forages, agricultural literacy
and Master Gardeners.
- In 2001-2002, the 4-H program had 40 community clubs with more than 845
youths participating. Of that number, 80 were Cloverbuds (pre-4-H).
- The Progressive Farmer Safety Day Camp provided rural life safety tips
to all of the county’s 300+ fourth-graders.
- Teen Leadership has become a stable program, with the number of members
holding at 92. With this group, we are getting more participation in the Charting
(self-discovery) program.
- The Yellow Ribbon Teen Suicide Prevention has helped 120 youths since November
1999.
- More than 100 agriculture producers participated in wool marketing (19,500
pounds), lamb marketing (390 lambs), and the W.Va. Beef Quality Assurance
Program (nearly 950 calves).
- More than 500 youths participated in a comprehensive 4-H and FFA educational
livestock program. The Junior Fair Market Livestock Sale grossed more than
$231,000. Youth exhibitors (including all exhibits) received nearly $19,000
in premiums.
- Thirty-four adults in a rural area participated in a Dining with Diabetes
cooking school presented by Extension, Jackson General Hospital, Jackson County
Health Department, and Winding Roads Health Consortium.
- Parents of all children in kindergarten through third grades (1,500) received
10 issues of the Family Times Newsletter encouraging them to become more involved
in their children’s learning.
- A total of 163 adults completed the eight-week Family Nutrition Program
where they received educational information, shared in food tasting demonstrations,
and received donated food items.
