Kanawha County Points of Pride

- In 2000, the Adult Expanded food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
enrolled 123 families in the Toyota Families in Schools Project in four schools
and at two housing projects.
- Some 1,000 youths from 15 elementary schools participate in weekly nutrition
lessons throughout the school year.
- 4-H is teaching life skills, enhancing self-esteem, and encouraging service
for 1,800 youths and adult leaders in 39 clubs. About 700 of them are involved
in camps, overnighters, the State Fair, international programs, and other
educational events.
- More than 40 children from J.E. Robins Elementary School read better because
of their participation in Energy Express, a summer reading and nutrition program.
Thirty-eight youths, parents, and Foster Grannies volunteered more than 1,400
hours to the six-week program.
- The Dining With Diabetes Cooking Schools attracted 200 participants. Seminars
were held at Montgomery General Hospital, West Virginia Health Right, Union
Carbide/Dow Chemical, Grace Bible Church, and Institute Church of the Nazarene.
