Lincoln County Points of Pride

- Accessing Information. The WVU Lincoln County office provided factual
information on a variety of topics and linked people to research-based knowledge
in such areas as pest control, gardening, child development, nutrition, and
leadership.
- Reaching Out to the Community. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education
Program (EFNEP) outreach instructors visited homes to assist families with
money management and nutrition, helped teachers present nutrition information
to classes, presented programs to curb tobacco use, and helped pregnant teens
have healthier babies and develop parenting skills. The Children, Youth, and
Families at Risk program linked parents more closely to their children's schools,
helped promote reading, and provided computer training.
- Improving Lifestyles. Diabetic and healthy cooking "schools" were
offered in several areas. Teens and adults received with recipes, sample meals,
and nutrition information. Tobacco addiction and cancer prevention programs
were offered to youths and adults.
- Providing Summertime Opportunities. Four Energy Express sites promoted
reading and nutrition for six weeks to 201 elementary-school-age children.
Two weeklong residence camps and four weeklong day camps provided 595 youths
with skills in leadership, conflict resolution, nutrition education, and decision-making.
- Strengthening Youths. Twenty-one traditional 4-H community and school
clubs reached 218 youths. Resiliency-building programs provided high-risk
youths with mentoring and social opportunities.
