Marion County Points of Pride

- Last summer, 86 at-risk children participated in Energy Express at Fairview
Middle and East Dale Elementary schools for six weeks. They received nutritious
meals and help with reading and writing skills.
- Dining with Diabetes reached 48 families. Research showed that families
are improving their skills for managing diabetes.
- As a result of Marion County being included in the Children, Youth, and
Families at Risk (CYFAR) Program in 2001, WVU Extension partnered with several
local agencies, businesses, and city and county governments to conduct three
community planning meetings to identify problems facing youths in the Maple
Avenue neighborhood. UMWA Local 1717 donated $500 for safety upgrades to the
612 Mac Community Center. A $1,000 Kellogg Foundation grant will be used to
implement the First Impressions Program. Extension is working to empower residents
and provide safe, educational activities to the community's youths.
- The Family Times newsletters, piloted at two local elementary schools,
provided parenting education to 80 families.
- County 4-H camp involved 160 children and 37 leaders.
- The Family Nutrition Program, coordinated by Beth Bragg, served 61 limited-resource
families.
- A research project, initiated at two Head Start sites, will determine the
impact of literacy intervention on parents and children.
- Child care classes and two parenting education workshops reached 92 child
care providers.
