McDowell County Points of Pride

- Forty-seven 4-H'ers from the North Elkins District participated with the
Maybeury 4-H Club on an overnight lock-in at the Greater Bluefield Community
Center.
- McDowell Parks & Recreation and Elkhorn Watershed Association worked with
the Extension Office to set up a mobile home donated by the WVU excess property
program on land that will become a park in Maybeury.
- Three hundred fifty McDowell County eighth-graders participated in the
sixth annual Career Fair at the National Guard Armory in Welch. Thirty-seven
presenters from business, state and local government, health and other public
agencies supported this collaboration between the McDowell County Board of
Education and Extension.
- Extension helped direct victims, donations and supplies, and volunteers
from many organizations to various flood relief centers in the county.
- The Adult Family Nutrition Program (FNP) reached 266 limited-resource families
with sessions on nutrition, food safety, and money management. The nutrition
outreach instructor conducted a day care provider workshop for 150 people.
The Youth FNP reached 295 students with nutrition education classes in four
elementary schools.
- Energy Express, a six-week summer reading and nutrition program, had a
total of 104 participants at Bradshaw and Kimball elementary schools.
- The Dining with Diabetes cooking schools helped 20 participants understand
healthy food choices and increase their self-confidence in preparing diabetic
meals. .
